Q: I don’t want to haul luggage around, whats the best camping backpack?
for convenience, price, and city to city and plane to plane traveling- im looking to get something that will hold everything for about 2 weeks worth of travels (tho ill be gone for over 3 months), but i HATE hauling those huge suitcases around everywhere- any suggestions?
A: check out www.ricksteves.com
Only pack supplies for a week at a times, use travel size toiletries even though they cost a bit more per ounce/millilitre. Send all your souvenirs home by FEDEX / DHL / UPS, etc
I recommend a 65 litre or smaller backpack, and line it with chicken wire for protection against slashing open by thieves and also line with a plastic trash bag for waterproofing. Wear hiking boots while travelling from place to place because they will be your single heaviest item. Even at 65 litres, you will be sweating within a 1/2 mile of walking.
Throw out all non-essential items except for a GSM cell phone and charger. You will be able to buy phone cards in the form of sim cards in most countries. Also, load all your contacts, passport info, stolen credit card phone numbers etc into a text file and store it on a yahoo account or similar.
Q: What is the best camping tent? I want to backpack with it, but also be able to sit up in it as well?
Since backpacking tents are so small…it’s hard to “sit-up” in them. Most, all you can do is lay down. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Please provide a LINK to it online, thanks!
A: My recommendation is the Eureka Spitfire. It’s 3 1/2 feet tall on the inside, so you can sit up, but it’s still really lightweight, only 3 1/2 pounds fully packed. (It’s advertised at 2 lbs 12 oz, but I’m pretty sure that’s without the fly.)
Here’s a link to one store that has it online.

Q: Where is the best place to buy a backpack for overnight camping?
Im looking for a cheap backpack for camp.
(one of those big ones)
A: I frequent REI alot. They carrier all the outdoor needs. You may also want to see if you have a sportman’s warehouse in your area. Dare I say walmart carriers some of these types if you are looking for the type with the metal or plastic internal or external frame.
Q: best hiking backpack for 3 days?
I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of hiking/camping backpack would be best for a three day camping trip.
Mostly how many liters would be good.
Thank you.
A: Look into the Osprey brands – they cannot be beat for comfort.
I would use the Atmos 50 or 65 for a 3 day trip.
You should try some on in a local sporting goods store to make sure of the fit – mens and womens models are cuts different due to differences in the hips and chest area.
Q: What are the best places to camp/ backpack in East US?
A: Most definitely the, Appalachian trails, in North Carolina.
Oh my, can I go?
God bless America, from the mountains to the prairies, from sea to shinning sea.
May I take your time to add a little prayer?
God, Please be with our Nation as we vote for a President under You. Guide us, educate us, let us see the truths, this I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Thank you. It’s just that, I want to always have the liberty, to take off, when ever, and go hiking, any where, in our great country. There is a shady character, a candidate, which reminds me of some reading I’ve done called, Revelations!
God bless us all…
Q: What is the best website to buy camping gear?
Does anyone know who the best online retailer is for camping equipment (Sierra Designs and Mountain Hardware)? I am going to purchase a new tent, sleeping bag, and backpack.
A: For top quality gear and exceptional customer service check out:
www.rei.com or www.ems.com
For great gear and great prices check out:
www.llbean.com = amazing deals on gortex
or
www.sierratradingpost.com = great outlet prices on name brands.
Q: Best backpack for a tall person?
I’m 6′4″ and have yet to find a pack long enough for my torso. My torso length is 24 inches long. I am in need of a pack that holds enough for 3-5 days of camping/hiking in the backcountry.
A: i’m glad you know your torso length. that’s valuable information. i’d suggest calling major retailers (REI, EMS, etc) and explaining your problem. they may be able to find suitable models quickly. looks like possibly Osprey and Granite Gear offer models that may fit you, but you’ll really want to try them on first. good luck.
unfortunately, you may have to go with a custom pack. depending on what you want, this could be reasonably affordable or crazy expensive. my friend Brian runs a company called ULA Equipment and they offer a pack called the Catalyst in an extra large (torsos 23+ inches). unfortunately his shop is closed for the next three months, but his packs are always well-liked so the wait may be worth it. the website is http://www.ula-equipment.com
an extremely expensive option is McHale packs. they have a loyal, almost cultish following. http://www.mchalepacks.com/
many small manufacturers would probably be able to make a custom model for you. most of the folks i know are on the lightweight/ultralight end of the spectrum, so if you pack heavy they might not be the right choice for you. i coudn’t begin to name all the cottage manufacturers here in the US (plus those that operate in other areas of the world), but if you were to post this question over at backpacking.net you might get quite a list of makers. good luck.
good luck & i hope this helps.
Q: What are the best websites and outdoors stores for backpacking/outdoors/camping/hiking Pro Deals?
Hi there! I’m going to be working as a Ranger at Philmont Boy Scout Camp this summer, and I was just curious if anyone had any leanings toward any good websites or stores that had really good Pro Deals for us “Outdoor Professionals.” I’m a small-to-medium sized girl
Thanks!
A: There are a lot of good products to look for:
The ones that I would recommend are either Northface, Outlander, or ones of good quality like that.

Q: best north face backpack?
i like the durability of north face so i decided to purchash one for school and camping. Im wondering whats the best backpack they have out right now with a good, large size to fit plenty of clothing, books, binders and other thick materials? thanks
A: I would recommend The North Face Recon. I remember looking at it in an REI store a couple of years ago and being quite impressed with it. It has a laptop sleeve, hydration port, organizer pocket, large front mesh pocket, and much more.
If you’re willing to consider other brands, the Kelty Torrey 1950 is awesome. I’ve owned it for about 2 years, and I use it all the time–for day hiking, camping, and just carrying stuff around town.
It has so many cool features I can’t even list them all here. Let me just say it has everything the Recon has and more, like an integrated rain cover that zips away into its own pocket. It has held up well, although a zipper on one of the small hip belt pockets broke right after I bought it.
I’m sure you will be happy with either of those choices.
Q: Best dog for camping/backpacking?
I’m planning on going on a 2 year trip. I’ll be in a car or backpacking through most of it. I need a big dog that is capable of taking on big animals and can go on long hikes. I was thinking between the following:
-American Staffordshire Terrier
-Ridgeback
-Anatolian Shepherd
-German Shepherd
Keep in mind, I need features like:
>Strength
>Speed
>Grooming (not very much)
>Weather compatibility
>Good companion
It will be from Mexico to Peru so I imagine I will be running into some crazy things.
Thanks in advance!!
A: I would be inclined to take a ridge-back as they are able to take the humidity and heat of that area without overheating, it is also important to have the animal vaccinated and quarantine may be required so check that out as well no good if the dog is stuck in quarantine while Your visa runs out.
but the rid gee is by fr the best for traveling there loyal and faithful if you train it, it will always be yours and no one will ge near you they also have a lock jaw like a staffy and where bread in south africa to hunt lions on the plains so the psi in their jaws is quite strong they can also do with les water than other breeds due to breading, they are also a small pack dog and would rather be with humans the an other dogs so this would help with keeping the dog with you he wouldn’t go walk about as lo a bitch is the better sex to have when travelling (provided she is desexed don’t want puppies while away) because they are very protective just like a mum
hope this helps fellow backpacker in OZ
Q: Best 12 gauge for camping/backpacking/home?
Okay, so I want to get a quality pistol grip 12 gauge that’ll take 3 1/2″ mags for Alaska when I move there but I can use 2 3/4″ for the home option for now.
Hopefully I’ll be getting into backpacking again so I want something that can take a beating and hopefully won’t rust.
I’m thinking stainless… are there any negatives to stainless? Weight?
It must be easy to disassemble.
I don’t have much money, but I want something that will last for the rest of my life if that’s possible.
I’ll spend a few extra bucks for a gun that might be worth it, if you got any ideas.
Years ago I had a Winchester Defender. It seemed a bit flimsy and I never really liked it.
I’ve fired shotguns that I’ve definitely liked I just can’t remember what’s what in the shotgun world.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Actually, 3″ seemed to be sufficient for bear, if I remember correctly. 3 1/2″… ouch!
Also, the gun has to be legal in the Republic of Californica since that is where God chose to give me a trade that requires me to be in la-la land for the time being.
Alaska… man, I can’t wait!
Mike – Have you ever backpacked in Alaska?
My friend refused to bring a gun when we were packing up there but always requested to carry mine when we went through areas that looked like a backhoe had been digging up the ground.
I refused his requests and the guy was glued to my side… drove me freakin’ nutzo.
I carried that Defender for over 200 miles in Alaska. I’m familiar with the burden.
It was 15 years ago and I’m not up to date on the firearms of today.
Just looking for suggestions and I remembered after posting this question that 3 1/2″ is a bit much. 3″ will work a dandy.
budget – $500ish if it’s worth it. Maybe more if it is definitely worth it.
Yeah, I’ve used a pistol grip on a shotgun before, but it was 15 years ago.
I practiced/trained for almost a year before I went to Alaska and was pretty slick with it at the time. I do realize that I have many days/weeks/months of practice ahead of me.
I went for the pistol grip before because the Alaskan bush is a clustered nightmare to amble through and I wanted something that I could be relatively quick with the oppressiveness of the bush.
A: I just seen a U tube video on the AA12. It is stainless and has very little recole. You can pump 15 rounds into a target in about 3 sec. Has a mag that holds up to 30 rounds. It showed were it could go up over 1000 rounds before any cleaning was done and then very little. The only draw back that I know of is that it is pretty much designed for military use right now.
Q: Which overnight hiking/camping backpack is better?
am looking to buy a backpack for overnight weekend/weeklong hiking/camping. I am a beginner so bear with me. There are 3 packs on my local craigslist and I was wondering if you could tell me what would be the best buy.
They are the-
Jansport Cascade 65-
http://appleton.craigslist.org/spo/11600…
Jansport Rockies 100-
http://appleton.craigslist.org/spo/11600…
Jansport Purist 56-
http://appleton.craigslist.org/spo/11600…
I am thinking the main things I need is space for my sleeping bag, sleeping mat, and tent. Then I can just squish in the food clothes and water wherever.
I am quite poor and this is a relatively big investment for me so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time.
P.S.-
Ive been on one hiking expedition to havisupai in Arizona. It was 10 miles each way. I’m thinking of doing things similar to this.
If that helps at all
A: as far as pack choice goes, i personally think the lightest would be your best choice. just because it’s light doesn’t mean it’s not roomy. as far as price goes ( boy do i know the feeling of having to consider price above all else) buy the best pack you can afford.
personally i own a nebo wilderness 55 and it works great for weekends and week long trips. you just need to fine tune the packing and you can do anything with it.
good luck!
Q: What are the best places in the Eastern U.S. to backpack or hike for multiple days?
See me and a couple of friends want to go backpacking in the woods, away from society, and see some pretty sites along the way. We want to enjoy it so I was looking more for a multiple day trip. Also, we would like to stay around Ky, Tn, Nc, Sc, Va, and some surrounding states. We want to camp but not the modern kind where you stay in a log cabin or even pay to stay somewhere, we want to just pitch a tent sorta thing.
A: How about the Appalachian Trail, it starts in I believe Tennessee, and ends in Maine.
It has “shelters” every so often that are actually 3 sides of a cabin with the front wide open..they also have a wood floor. There are no bathroom’s in them but usually there is one near by, they are also usually near water of some kind..lake..stream and are on a first come first serve basis.

My husband and I live near Cleveland and want to backpack through a national or state park for 4-5 days this summer. We don’t want to drive more than ~6 hours from our home. Where should we go for the best hiking and camping?
A: Promised Lands State Park, Pocono Mountains PA. I am there almost every weekend. Great for camping/fishing/and hiking. Very good trails. see website. Have Fun!
