Q: Backpack, travel…?
So I’ve purchased this backpack at amazon.com, it’s the brand called Jansport, and I was wondering can I used that for camping, walking around city, etc? do you think it can fit my personal needs? do you think the bag might be too big? It’s a superbreak pack btw, also I checked the review, the people said they liked it alot.

A: I had that type of backpack while I was in high school and I loved it! JanSport is a very good brand and is very durable (I took my on several camping trips). I suppose it’s the same size as any other backpack…so you should be able to fit all of your school supplies in it.

Q: Adventure summer camps….& reviews?
I’m just checking out high schooler’s summer adventure camps…
Anyone know of any they’ve heard of, or been in, and loved?
Also I’m looking for sites that have reviews from the teen’s experiences.

(These camps being overnight, where you don’t just stay in a cabin/hotel but you camp and hike and backpack and rock climb…)

Thanks for your help!

*Yes, I have googled, but I also would like somone else’s opinions on what they think sounds like a good camp, or was great!*

A: Hello!

I don’t know if you’re familiar with Teen Tours, but that’s what is sounds like you are talking about. This essentially allows students to travel with a backpack and a group of people their age through a certain part of the world. For instance, when I went, I saw the southwest area (CA, AZ, NV, UT). I used this website http://www.choicecamps.com/travel-programs to find my teen tour trip. You should check the website out, it’s actually really helpful. You can narrow down the kind of trip you are looking for and search the area you want to be in. You can view pictures, watch dvds, and find our more information on the website.

I hope I helped and let me know if you have any more questions.

Q: chances at Dartmouth, Stanford, Princeton, MIT, UChicago?
I am currently a Junior
Ethnicity: gonna leave it blank. (would it be assumed I’m white or Asian if I did this)
UW GPA: 3.93ish
-school doesn’t rank, but I got an award for being the junior with the highest weighted GPA, meaning I’m a would-be valedictorian.

SAT I’s (I’m retaking this October or November. I will aim for 750+ in CR and W.)
Math: 800
CR: 730
Writing:710

SAT II’s
Math II: 800
U.S. History: 710
Chemistry: 690
(we weren’t quite done with the AP Chem and APUSH curriculums by the time I took the May subject tests, so I will take them again on June 5. I expect a 730+ in both.)

Past AP’s: US Gov and Politics-5
Projected AP scores for this year:
APUSH: 5
AP Chem: 4/5
AP Eng. Lang: 4/5

-school doesn’t offer honors classes

My only B’s have been graphic design freshman year and AP Gov last year(will a 5 on the exam atone for this)? I got straight A’s last semester, but will probably get a B this semester in AP English language and A’s in everything else.

-will mention Math, Economics, and Chemistry respectively as my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice majors.

-camping/backpacking

Miscellaneous:
I also volunteer at the library during the summer.
-Traveled around Europe.

A: First, congratulations on your accomplishments. You have a very strong application, stronger than most. The hiking, food-critic, and Eagle scout extracurriculars are especially interesting and show a lot of personality. I wouldn’t worry about those Bs at all.

You definitely have a good chance of getting into at least one of these schools, as long as your letters of rec are positive too.

Will it be assumed that you are white or Asian if you leave your ethnicity blank – usually yes, and in your case definitely. Your activities scream “rich white kid” – not to say that you are definitely white or rich, but that is what will be assumed. On that note, leave the “traveled around Europe” thing off your application, unless you financed it yourself or did something important there – to be able to travel around Europe for fun implies a lot of privilege that you might not necessarily want to highlight.

Should you put Young Republicans on your application – UChicago, Dartmouth, and Princeton are more conservative than most of the upper-tier schools, so that would probably be okay (though if you don’t want to be surrounded by mostly-socially-liberal students, you might not feel comfortable there). Not sure about MIT, and I would assume that Stanford is on the liberal side.

Go ahead and add Harvard and Yale to your list. They are mostly liberal but still have a group of rich, Southern conservative types (Yale’s Tory Club, for example). You probably wouldn’t fit at Brown or Columbia, but UPenn-Wharton might be good.

Other schools you might be interested in – Georgetown, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Rice, Baylor, UVA, William & Mary.

Good luck!

Q: Trying to decide between DSLR and high quality Point and shoot.?
I know that a person’s “shooting” situation determines the camera and lens combo needed. The problem is that I really can’t afford a lot of equipment right now but do want to good quality photos.

The situation I am most concerned with is taking photographs during wilderness camping trips. These will be backpacking trips of several days at a time. Light levels will vary from low ligt in heavy dense woodlands to bright sunshine without a speck of shade to be found.

I had a Panasonic DMC-FZ20 for a couple of years and now kick myself for getting rid of it. http://howto.netmorale.com/viewtopic.php?t=303

Looking on ebay and reading literally hundreds of reviews have left me pretty confused to say the least.

Do you have a favorite point and shoot or DSLR that is under $600??

A: Given the situation you’re describing, I would tend to go with a point and shoot for several reasons.

1. More compact and lighter. When backpaking, you need to watch both. Which leads to –

2. Easier access. Since a point and shoot is generally going to be smaller, you can get at it more easily when you have it stowed away.

3. Less expensive. If you damage it beyond repair, you won’t be out a lot of money if you have to replace it.

4. Lower battery drain. You will probably get more shots from your batteries with a point and shoot than you will with a DSLR. Even so, you will need to take several spare batteries with you since there aren’t too many places in the wilderness where you can recharge your batteries.

As far as a favorite, there are so many good cameras available it’s hard to make a recommendation. I have shot Nikons for years so when I went from film to digital, I went with Nikon. Nikon have several good entry level point and shoots as well as a good entry level DSLR.

Folks complain that Canon and Nikon get recommended more than the other cameras out there. That’s because there are more Canon and Nikon uses than the others, and we tend to be loyal to our cameras. Figure out what features you need and see which camera best meets those needs. If you’re not sure, go to you local camera store and see what they’ve got. They will be glad to help you select the right camera.

Q: Lost Coast Trail: Backpacking in Northern California Timing?
Anyone done this trail and know if it’s realistic to drive to Mattole trailhead on a Friday night, camp near there, hike saturday, camp, hike out to other trailhead on Sunday and get a ride back up to our car? (we’ve got a service to call for the ride, etc, but aren’t sure about the timing of the hike considering mixed reviews about the difficulty of the backpacking. Thanks for any thoughts!!)

A: A two day hike is pushing it, you have to catch the tides at just the right time to get through to the other end and with so much to see why push it. Catching a ride is also risky, there is service you can pay for that will cover that problem.

It’s a moderate hike at best trudging through the soft sand sections and boulder beaches slows you down. You can plan on three days and if all goes well and your through in 2 bring your phone with you to arrange the ride back. But I say take your time enjoy the hike do it in 4 days

Q: What backpacking backback should i get?
I am just getting into backpacking. I love to hike, i’ve just never camped out in the wilderness. I am about 6 feet tall and have a pretty big waist. I have researched a few backpacking packs, and was thinking about getting a golite expedition pack. i want a really big pack that i can yous for a multiple night hike/camp. I was looking at the go-lite expedition pack because of its size and reviews. Does anyone have any recomendations on what i should look for because i am kinda lost.

A: Couple of things, if you have a quality Outdoor Store in your area, they will have a rental department, I’d check it out and do a day hike or two with the backpack you’ve picked out (fully loaded) and see how that goes.

Another great idea is to pick up a book on backpacking or outdoor skills, a good start is the Boy Scout Handbook (always nice to have in home for emergencies anyways).

I still use an external frame pack because it works best for me (also about twenty years old and still working perfectly), so don’t ignore the old school.
