Q: What is the best camping tent to buy?
I just wanted to find out what everyone else’s opinion is on trying to buy the best tent. Looking for one that does not leek if it rains. We went camping last year and the rain got in our tent it was one we bought from wal-mart and is Ozark Trail. If you could help me find a great tent I would appreciate it.

A: I swear by Euerka tents. I currently own 3 of various sizes. The oldest is now 13 or 14 years old and with a new coat of seam sealer, would not hesitate to take it on a camping trip. It has been used about 150 nights so far.

I work in the camping industry, NO not for Eureka! I am a manager in a large nationwide sporting goods company. I can basically get any tent I choose, but I choose Eureka due to their quality of workmanship, customer service, and value for the money.

Q: What is the best camping tent for 2?
What is the best camping tent for 2? Do you recomend any brand?

A: Two factors are room and weight. Price is important as well but getting the weight down increases price.

I recommend Colman tents for comfort and price they have a stay dry guarantee and have many styles and sizes that fit every budget. For two folks I recommend this tent.

For two folks and for backpacking I recommend this tent

Q: What are the best tent camping sites in Florida?
I’m considering Highlands Hammock and Ocala for tent camping for a group of us for my birthday. Assuming we don’t want primitive sites, which site #’s are the best for tent camping (privacy/location) for these parks or others in central or south florida?

A: If you REALLY want something nice, you might want to consider Fort DeSoto County Park in southern Pinellas County (Tampa Bay area).

Fort DeSoto’s North Beach was named the #1 Beach in the U.S. (Hawaii included) in 2005! It sits on the Gulf, at the mouth of Tampa Bay!

You can go to http://www.fortdesoto.com/servlets/Page/camping for more info and to make reservations.

Q: Where is the best tent camping in Southern California?
My wife and little girl have never been camping, but are excited to try it. Where in Southern California can I go set up a tent for a weekend, that is safe for a family and can have fun, preferably a beach site?

A: El Capitan, Refugio, Doheny state beach campgrounds
all very nice and they reserve quickly.

good luck!

Q: What is the best camping tent? I want to backpack with it, but also be able to sit up in it as well?
Since backpacking tents are so small…it’s hard to “sit-up” in them. Most, all you can do is lay down. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please provide a LINK to it online, thanks!

A: My recommendation is the Eureka Spitfire. It’s 3 1/2 feet tall on the inside, so you can sit up, but it’s still really lightweight, only 3 1/2 pounds fully packed. (It’s advertised at 2 lbs 12 oz, but I’m pretty sure that’s without the fly.)

Here’s a link to one store that has it online.

Q: What are the best tent camping resorts in Colorado?
me and my soon to be husband are going for our honeymoon but I want to pick the best, most beautiful, most fun place to go. Where we can go to the spa, swim, horseback ride, hike, ski, bike, maybe sports like tennis, and do a lot of different things since we are planning to be there for two weeks. thank you!

A: Ash, I’m not aware of any tent camping resorts in Colorado. There are resorts and there are tent camping sites, but I don’t think I have ever heard of them combined. Is that what you are looking to find?

Anyway, what time of year to plan to come to Colorado, there are many fun things to do, but it might be difficult to both bike and ski unless you come in the spring or early summer.

It also depends on your budget, skiing at the major resorts can be very expensive ($70-100 per day plus rental fees for equipment). There are plenty of smaller ski resorts around the State that are more reasonable.

Some places to do some research on…
Winter Park (great skiing, nice small town, sledding near by… also beautiful in the summer with lots of activities like mountian biking, hiking, horse riding etc. )

Estes Park (a beautiful summer and fall destination)

Vail / Beaver Creek… an amazing (and expensive) winter vacation spot.

Pagosa Springs – less expensive, great any time of year, not far from visiting Mesa Verde or riding the Durango to Silverton train.

Ouray – Known as “Little Switzerland”, great any time of year, particularly great in the winter if you’ve ever wanted to try ice-climbing. A beautiful place for all sorts of summer adventures. I’m looking forward to taking my wife to the Chipetta spa this summer not far from there.

Steamboat Springs – what a cool mountain town, it has some of the best atmosphere in the state. Skiing & hot springs are excellent in the winter. Hikes, horses, bikes, and hot springs are king of the summer activities.

Aspen – Whoa, now here’s a town that will really leave an impression. This is likely my favorite area to backpack in the State. I haven’t skied here yet, but all the resorts in the area are world class. This would really be an amazing honeymoon spot any time of year, but I’m not sure how close to town you’ll be able to stay if you want to use a tent for your accommodations.

I would suggest planning on staying in hotels or resorts for several nights of your trip to make the whole experience a bit more pleasant for a romantic get-away.

Bed and Breakfasts are a fun way to travel around Colorado, you may be able to work your way around to a several parts of the State in two weeks time.

If you fly to Colorado, you will most likely fly into Denver or Colorado Springs for affordable prices. But, if you are among the super rich you can also fly into Vail, Aspen, and Steamboat to cut drive time significantly from Denver.

Q: Where is the best tent camping spot in Colorado?
My wife and I have about 4 days with out the kids and want to go out and finally experience Colorado. We have lived here for 4 years and we hardlyh ever go to the mountains. We want to do some fishing and some easy to moderate hiking. Caming in a KOA is out of the question (that’s not really camping) but a mountain campground would be ok. If we need to hike in that would be fine too.. Thanks for any suggestions.

A: Maroon Bells near Aspen is my absolute favorite spot for mountain scenery in Colorado. You can camp nearby at the Silver Queen, Silver Bell or Silver Bar campgrounds (Silver Queen is the best). The hiking is exquisite in the summer – you will not believe all the wildflowers! I believe you can fish in the Roaring Fork River with the appropriate license. A great way to get there would be to drive over Independence Pass (Hwy 82 from the east). You can also check out Aspen for a nice meal or to spot a celebrity. I also recommend the Woody Creek Tavern not far away for a decent meal and a drink in honor of the late Dr. Hunter S. Thompson! If you really want to experience the outdoors in Colorado, this is the place. Have a GREAT time!

Q: What’s the best camping tent that will keep the rain out?
We would like a tent that has either 2 or 3 bedroom dividers and possibly an attatched porch screen area. Thank you!

A: A good water resistant tent is one with slanted/rounded top/sides, poly floor and up the sides about 5 or 6 inches, has a rain fly THAT COVERS THE WHOLE TENT AND WINDOWS, not just a little bonnet, and I spray waterproofer on my whole tent (except the bottom) every time I use it. You can improvise a fly with a visqueen tarp tied securely to trees to take the brunt of the rain. I’ve endured major storms with only dampness. Also, the whole tent must be staked and DO NOT parking it in an obvious watershed. I’m 67 and have tent camped all my life. The tent you are looking at is cumbersome, but spacious inside and might be only a fair weather tent.

Q: where is the best tent camping spots in northern new hampshire(white mountain area)?
Where is an amazing place to go camping with a tent in the white mountain area? Please help me out, ive never been up north before. Thanks!

A: Where to begin! There are tons of great camping in The Whites. If you are looking for more campground-style tenting then look at Lafayette Place Campground in Franconia Notch State Park. Greta are for hiking, camping and anything else outdoors.

If you’re looking for something more wilderness/backcountry try 13 Falls Tentsite or Liberty Springs Campsite. Both are wilderness camping which requires a bit of a hike to it but its worth it.

Check out this link for all White Mountain Tentsites.

Q: Where’s the best tent camping in November in southern California?
Don’t want to go to the beach again and don’t want to freeze at the Grand Canyon.

A: The best camping is at Carpinteria State Beach… In fact, most of the best sites in SoCal are at the beach: El Capitan, Refugio, McGrath, Broome, Leo Carillos, Doheny, San Clemente, South Carlsbad and San Elijo. They are far and away the most popular sites.

However, at this late date, you don’t have much of a chance of scoring a site, especially around Thansgiving.

Your best bet might be Lake Cachuma, where it’s first-come, first-served. Good luck.

Joshua Tree is going to be almost as cold as the Grand Canyon. It is the high desert. Expected lows for this weekend are expected to be 34 degrees.

Q: What is the best tent camping beach in Rhode Island?
Somewhere between Providence and Newport and Mystic. We would like a private site…maybe trees, or just room in between sites. We are not into big crowds….just a peaceful spot to relax. Any ideas?

A: you can’t camp directly on the beach; but there is a great cheap state park about 2-5 mins from the beach called Fisherman’s state park in Narragansett. It’s located right on rt. 108 and minutes away from scarborough beach, sand hill cove beach and galilee. Good food all around too. hope this helps!

Q: Where can I find the best camping tent to fit six people?
i need help i need to find a tent that can fit 6 people or more i have tried everything and i cant find the right one!!!!!!

A: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/index/index-display.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/subcategory/subcategory-index.jsp.10_A&_DAV=search_redir&returnPage=&rid=&returnQueryString=&navAction=push&navCount=0&parentId=&id=cat550002&cmCat=search_redir
The link above has good size tents but they are on the expensive side, as would any 6 man tent would be.

http://www.backcountry.com/store/search.html?q=tents&path=cbcs%23%23%2d1%23%23%2d1%7e%7eq74656e7473%7e%7ecbcsc3%23%23d%23%23f9%7e%7ecbcsc3s28%23%23c%23%23d4%7e%7encbcsc3s28g92%23%230%23%23o
These tents are a bit less expensive and are probably exactly what you are looking for.

I would also look into 2- 3 man tents or 3- 2man tents.

Q: Best tent camping in Southern California during Jan/Feb?
I’m looking to take a 2 or 3 day trip with the girlfriend and was looking to find a camping area that’s good for pitching a tent during January. I live in Orange County and was hoping to not go too far north. I’d say Santa Barbara and below. I hear Joshua Tree would probably be too cold at night. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A: Any of the coastal ranges are good this time of year, In the O.C. there is a nice hike in campsite in the crystal cove state park, few know about it it’s about a mile and a half into the back portion of the park. Up the coast is Malibu state there are many car camp sites and a couple of hike in campsites there as well. If your looking to car camp, Casper’s regional park on the ortega hwy in the OC has some great tent sites and Doheny beach is popular. Going south to San Diego county I like Rancho Cuyamaca state park they have hike in camp sites as well as car camp sites. Keep in mind jan/feb are the coldest months for camping in Kalifornistan and many campgrounds close for the winter definitely those above 5000ft.. here is couple of links to get you started

Q: What is a Best tent for camping in the heat?
I am going to a festival that the heats gets a little much in the mornings, I understand tent fans are around so i guess which is the best tent fan/ tent combo. I do not want a pro one thats super $$ just in case it has to be left behind at the concert (on the other side of the country) heh thank you for your time and answers

A: Tarps and hammocks are the best. They make hammocks with mosquito netting built in if bugs are a problem.

Tarps eliminate walls and you get more ventilation. No privacy really. You can pitch it low over a rope (tied between two trees and knotted to maximize opposing forces, you want it really tight) into an A frame that doesn’t quite hit the ground, or into a modified A frame where one side is longer than the other, or a flat plane on an incline with the tarp opening to the private side. You still get more circulation under a tarp because the ends are open, you can cover them in rain with what is called a “beak”, by using a poncho or a piece of plastic.

When you use tarps, you also want a ground cover, this could be a piece of 6 mm plastic, a neat sheet, or a piece of nylon from Walmart’s clearance fabric dept or even a trash bag that you cut open.

Campmor and REI have great tarps, look for their 8×10 nylon tarp, it is waterproof, and very easy to use, grommets, for about 40 US dollars. You have to get your own line to pitch it with. Nylon masonry cord in bright colors is great. I always color coded mine to find corners vs sides. Tarps can also be plastic, such as you would throw over the bed of your pickup or a stack of firewood, or you can use any piece of waterproof material that you can tie corners into a sheetbend (a knot). You can get all kinds of tarps, all different carry weights, etc. I always had great results with the first one I mentioned, from www.campmor.com

Mosquito hammocks are great. For shelter over you, pitch a tarp as above, just higher, no ground cover needed. What is so cool about these is that you get air circulation all around you. Sucks in the winter so I always hit the ground but in summer there is NOTHING better. Your pack goes underneath you for maximum shelter of you and your gear, if you have it with you. So you don’t need a lot of surface area under the shelter, use a smaller tarp, save packweight.

Hennessey Hammocks offer a lot of hammocks, they all have rainflys which attach directly to the hammock, eliminating the need for a tarp. Very popular. I never did like them.

Other hammock brands, these are cottage industries for the most part…so supporting small businessmen, you will pay more to buy from the little guys:

Speer
mosquitohammock.com
Crazy Creek
Clark or Clarke (not sure sp)
Byer of Maine
Travel Hammock

(above are all silk or nylon hammocks) Prices for these vary a lot. With a bugnet you will pay more. Without, they can start at 15 dollars….Hennesseys start at about 100 dollars.

You can also get rope/mesh/net ones that leave nice waffle prints on your butt, and these are available at most discount stores for about 10 dollars.

Have fun, don’t forget your bug net if you are near water.

Q: What is the best tent when camping with kids?!?
My husband and I are going camping in August and we trying to find a good tent. We want a dome tent for 6-8 people. It is actually going to be just my hubby, my 9 month old and myself, but I want the extra room (which our old 4 person tent doesn’t have). Does anyone have any suggestions? We’re wanting to spend between $100-$200. Thanks!

A: short, but simple answer. you can EASILY find Copeman (or Coleman i think rather) brand tents for ridiculously cheap and they’re HUGE. take a look over there first. you’ll be surprised. and most of them are under $100 too!
