Q: Can landlords reduce the size of an occupied rental property without reducing the rent?
I am renting a home, not an apartment, in LA. I have been renting this home for four years. My landlord put a camping trailer in the side yard, fenced it in, and often sleeps there overnight. The trailer is right outside the bedroom windows of my daughter and niece, who are 24 and 21 years old. It is hooked up to the water and power of the synagogue next door, which the landlord also owns. There is a fence between the two properties, so my original boundary was very clear. Can a landlord legally put a permanent structure on a rental property, move into it against the current tenant’s wishes, and refuse to adjust the rent?
My lease states “the property located at (my address)” which I assume includes the yard.

Also — a camping trailer might not be a “permanent structure”, but it is completely enclosed by a new fence, so I no longer have access to that part of the property.

A: That is an odd situation.

Without reading your lease (and knowing the laws in LA), I can’t give you a definitive answer…and I’m not a lawyer. Still, here are some observations:

It’s likely your lease would be interpreted to give you the right to the house you’re occupying, but wouldn’t automatically give you the right to the land on which the trailer is sitting. You’d have to read your lease to see how it’s phrased.

It might be that a lawyer could argue that you’re being deprived of “quiet enjoyment” of your rental property, based on the presence of the trailer. I don’t know, but you could look into that.

On the other hand, although the other answers here suggest that a camping trailer is not a “permanent structure” (and it isn’t), the zoning authorities still might have some serious concerns about someone living in such a structure indefinitely…especially if it’s fenced in. While not a permanent structure, it’d be difficult to argue that it was temporary, either. So, the zoning authorities might be able to clarify whether the trailer, fence, and power hookups are permitted.

Have you spoken to the landlord to figure out why he’s done that? Is it a religious thing? Certain sects forbid work (including the operation of machinery) on the Sabbath. As a result, in order to worship they must walk to the synagogue. That may be the motivation in your case. There isn’t an easy way around that issue, except to find another place to live also within walking distance.

Best thing to do is to talk to your landlord.

Hope that helps.

Q: Question – newbie to RVs, Travel Trailers, Camping – cost to rent space in parks?
Hi – We are new to this whole RV thing – my wife and I are planning to buy a travel trailer and wanted to spend 2-3 months down south this winter (from about Dec until March) – Florida would be our first choice, especially on/near water. Please have some patience as we’re new to all this & know nothing about costs, best way to do it, etc. So far, in browsing various RV parks or state parks in Florida that rent out lot spaces overnight for travel trailers, we have found that the rent per day is Surprisingly expensive !! Wow. I was thinking that rental rates would be reasonable, like 150 or 200 a month to park your trailer. But I am finding prices routinely of 25-30 dollars a night ($900 a month !!) I had No idea rv parks charged that much. That really shocked us. Is there some other way or something we don’t know about in renting spaces in RV parks such that we could find something much more reasonable ?? Now we are second guessing our entire plan and thinking heck it would be about the same price or possibly even cheaper to just rent a small place in Florida for a couple of months over the winter (especially considering all the empty & vacant real estate in Florida right now, Landlords are desperate for renters down there). Well, any ideas, experiences, suggestions from seasoned RV and travel-trailer veterans on this high lot rental cost issue would be greatly appreciated !!!!

A: Yahoo has a forum for RVers, people are very helpful on there..check it out.
But in general if you specify you want a seasonal site at a campground the cost is usually cheaper.
Another way to go are to use state parks, they don’t always have cable or WIFI but will have electric and sewer on some sites.
Don’t give up!
Camping is a great thing to do, and a travel trailer is the best way to do it (in my opinion anyway) we have a 32′ travel trailer and absolutely love it and camping.

Good luck

EDIT: Go to yahoo groups..then travel then navagate from there, depending on what part of the country you are interested in. I use East Coast RVing. Check out NEW SMYRNA BEACH campground and RV park, Jan, Ferb and March rates are as of now $520.00 + 12% tax a month.
It includes electric AC and I forget what else!

Q: What could I open that is NOT a motorcycle dealership?
I’ve come into some money and would like to buy or start some kind of motorcycle related store, factory, company or rental thing. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thinks big.
Think small.
Think wacky and cool.
Be creative.

I like sport bikes, touring bikes, hotels (not camping), motorcycle classes, restaurants, trailers, Ducati, Buell, Suzuki and scooters, but I don’t know what all other people have done.

What would YOU open?

A: Why not open a small motorcycle related complex. A motorcycle themed restaurant on one end, a little bar on the other end with a motorcycle consignment shop in the middle. Give people a place to display and sell their bikes, for a small fee. Stock aftermarket parts for all makes, along with t-shirts, helmets, and riding gear. Line up a few scooters in the corner and rent them out. Next to that, put your Biker Hotel that includes a small garage with each room for riders to safely park their bikes during their stay. Add a go-cart track and a game room for the kids. How much money do you have????

Q: where is the closest campground to storyland NH?
needing a cottage or trailer rental as we have a 6 week old baby and can’t risk camping in the tent with the rain

A: Check out http://www.AmericaCheapHotels.com

Q: seeking RV rental in or close to White Mountains, New Hampshire?
For my families summer vacation, I would like to take them to a camp ground, but because we have a 1 year old and a three year old, we are not ready to go tenting. Are there places up in New Hampshire that rent RVs or trailers, etc. That way we can be at the camp ground, but have a “room” and a bathroom. Any other ideas regarding getting the camping experience without being in a tent is greatly welcome and appreciated! Thanks! -Ash

A: You can try the superpages which list RV rentals and campgrounds in that area (I used Concord as that’s just north of the forest, you can change the town to a closer area).

A cabin rental might be the best way to go. They’re a little larger than RV’s and much more comfortable. Here’s the link to the White Mountains National Forest website with lots of information about camping, including cabin rentals.

Q: Horse owners please… i want to buy a horse?
Sorry this is a little long but I need advice. I don’t have a horse to ride anymore, so i’m thinking about buying one. I’m 14 years old and in 9th grade. I plan on saving money for 2 years, starting 2010. I want to apply in a movie theatre (this movie theartre near me is offering a young casting member worker) and work camps at my barn. So the horse i want is 5,000. The boarding is 500 a month. (feed/hay, everything included) 2,000 for new supplies.. (turn-out blankets and such && other stuff i might want to get later on throughout the year.) I already have saddles, bridles, and riding stuff. so thats good. And have extra money for the vet for any emergencies, about 2,000. My mom can help pay the farrier to trim the horse’s hooves, vet, teeth, wormers and whatnot. I probably might not show.. maybe small home shows, but my mom can help with this too. (I really hope the horse i’m looking at will be still avaiable, seeing how i don’t see people buying much horses anymore.)

Soo for all the 2 years i want to make about 15,000

^^^ Does this plan sound good to you?!?! Am i missing anything???

I have never owned a horse before, I don’t know if my plan will go downhill.

Then for the year before the next year, i would making another 6,000 for the boaring.

more questions…

- How much does it cost to get the horse’s hooves trimmed?
- How much for a vet visit?
- Do you pay for he vet’s notes? if so, how much?
- How much does it cost for trailer rental?
-What happens if i go to college, could i bring my horse with me??? (after all in 2 years, i’m 16 turning 17. So highschool is ending soon)
-HOW MUCH would this cost to bring my horse??
I heard some colleges around me have some horse club and you can bring your horse??

READ THIS: I UNDERSTAND that the costs varies, but i would like to know just an estimate how much it costed you in different situations??

Thank youu :)
D J – Thanks for stating the OBVIOUS. what does it say up there about college? Does it say i want a trailer? I’m already researching my stuff on keeping a horse can’t you see now??? Whats yahoo answers for in the first place?? I’m asking about the ownership, seeing i have never OWNED a horse. yet i have partboarded and leaseed without all the owner expenses. Please read my question properly before answering kthx.
Yeah the movie theatre for part-time is all i can find at the moment. I also work for camps which pays lots per week. When i turn 16, i’m going to try to find a better job. The owner of the barn i ride at wont let me do barn working for some reason. :( (dosent like me) I’m planing on moving soon though.
Where i live, if you buy a cheaper horse..then something must be wrong with them or they might be a green horse. The horse i’m looking at is trained. and where i am, peope buy their horses here for 20,000. Oh well, when i do have the money i can look for a new horse, it was just a HOPE that this one is not sold, because they are perfect.
If my horse would need stitches or go lame, how much should i have saved then just incase? My parents can still help with both still. $5,000?
I want 2,000 for tack/supplies minus without the saddle, bridle stuff because show stuff is also included in this.. and throughout the year, I might want or need to buy something else for this horse.
And yes i do want to show, but not right away with this horse, when i get them.. probably when i would have them for the fist year, i can do small shows. after this i can go to bigger shows.
when i go to college or uni, i might just put them up for lease.
I can try getting the horse after college/ uni though. I know where i want to work after, and has a fair enough pay. (: But i’m still looking toward before college/uni. This college i can go to in the night and such. i can’t sleep anyway from my insomnia.
Nvm i will find a good medical insurance for the emergencies.

A: Okay well I see that nobody has faith in young people anymore. I was once in your situation! Okay so what i suggest is to look in to a lease to own option. That way you have a horse to call your own, and ride and take care of and you can get a taste of what your getting into. That’s what I did. I went to school in the AM (I was in honors) and I worked for 5 hours right after school and then straight to my barn. It took up my whole life. (which i was okay with because my horse was the only thing i cared about!)

Now, keep in mind, you are going to school, and you are going to be working part time… So you are going to have limited time for your horse!

Horses are VERY expensive. You never know what is going to happen to them.

All of the prices you ask about vary. This is what I pay.

Trimmed $50.00 very 6 weeks ($95 for shoes and trim)

My vet: Barn call $95.00 Take him in to her clinic $45 (I only use the vet if I have to, for injuries and what not. I do all my own vaccines)

I’m not sure what you mean by Vet notes…. Sorry.

I rent a 2 horse trailer for $50 a day plus $10 for the insurance on it. So basically $60. They have rates for longer uses too.

If you WANT to take your horse to college, pick one with boarding available to you or do your research and find a barn close to where you will be staying that maybe you could work out a deal to work off a portion of your board.
As for cost to take your horse to college, that’s all about research too. You can pay someone to haul him/her or you can find a place to rent a trailer, but you most likely have to find a way to get the trailer back.

I really think that $500 for food included…. WAY too much! I pay $125/month/horse and then i buy my own food and i spend less than that on my 2 horses.

As fo blankets and all that you can find them for good deals online used, and take them to the laundry mat and wash them. That’s what I do.

I never had any help from my parents or anything I have been doing this all on my own since I was 16. But I have been riding since I was 4 years old. My parents had friends that had horses, and I took lessons and had a horse I called mine, he really wasn’t but I liked to pretend.

If you have any other questions or need help with anything horsey, let me know!
